“The Case for Anonymity”
I don’t know if this is a particularly eloquent explanation of the importance of online communities, it focuses more on the anonymous aspects of 4chan (as well as the internet at large), which I don’t believe to be critical aspects of cultural development. It does however, outline some of the effects anonymity has on cultural generation, as well as the establishment and spread of these generated sub/counter cultural notions.
